Why Hire A Videographer For Your Wedding Day

Planning your Videographer

If you’ve recently got engaged, firstly congratulations! I’m sure you will have been starting to research and plan your special day and have been looking into ideas and also potential wedding services. We know that a photographer is usually one of the first things to get booked for a wedding, but many people either haven’t considered a videographer, or aren’t sure if they should book one.

One question we get asked a lot is ‘should I hire a videographer on my day’, obviously this is ultimately down to personal choice, however we spoke to one of our trusted suppliers, Steve Hood to get his opinion on why you should hire a videographer for your special day, and some tips on how to choose the right videographer for you.

1. Reliving the moment

There are some things that a photograph just can’t capture, such as reliving the moment you read your vows to one another. Hearing those words again will bring back all the emotions you felt on your special day for years to come. A wedding film can evoke the emotions of the day and capture those smiles and laughs that made the day memorable.

A wedding film is also a great way to share the day with anyone who couldn’t attend and allow them to share the experience. Imagine being able to show your wedding day to your children in years to come.

2. How to find the right videographer for you

As with many suppliers and wedding services, there are a lot of fantastic suppliers out there, many whom we have had the pleasure of working with. As with anything, it’s a good idea to speak to friends and family and get their personal recommendations, and also do your own research and look at reviews on supplier’s social media pages and website, read their testimonials to see what past couples have shared about their experiences.

You need to be sure that the supplier you choose is someone who you have a good rapport with and that you love their work too, so look at past examples of films they have produced before, send them any questions you have or perhaps meet them in person to ensure that they are the right choice for you. It also helps to use a videographer that is familiar with the venue or get more information about the best backdrops in the venue in which to film your wedding day.

3. Has your videographer ever worked with your photographer?

It is important to establish if your videographer works well alongside other suppliers, especially your photographer as they will be working very closely with one another on the day. They will both be at the front of the room during the ceremony as they will both want to capture the moment you both say ‘I Do’, so it’s important to know if they have worked together before so that you can rest assured that your day will run smoothly.

4. Choosing your style of wedding film

There are many styles of wedding film to choose from, so it’s important to choose someone who specialises in the style that you love. Make sure that you look through their portfolio online, perhaps go to chat to them in person if they are exhibiting at a wedding open day or fair that’s coming up. Another great source of inspiration is Instagram, there are so many shots and styles you can ask your  wedding supplier in Suffolk to recreate

The different styles of wedding film include:

  • Cinematic style – A modern edit with cinematic music, it will include a story of the day with some soundbites and speeches, often between 15-25 minutes long.
  • Documentary – A more traditional approach, this style is more of a chronological account of the day.
  • Cinematic trailer – This is usually a 1-5 minute highlight of your day, perfect for sharing on social media channels.

Some videographers can offer additional services such as drone footage over your venue although this will be dependent on the weather. You will need to make sure that they have the relevant insurance and a permit to fly from the relevant Civil Aviation Authority; they will also need permission from the venue.

6. On the day

It’s important for your day to run as smoothly as possible and it’s important to plan your time well with your videographer and also your photographer as they will both want to get those important shots they need.  This is where it’s crucial for them to work well alongside each other.
